Ancient Stone Sculpture Recovered Near Gulmarg, Police Transfer Artefact for Expert Preservation

Baramulla, Dec 4 (KNC): An ancient stone sculpture discovered during a routine patrol on the outskirts of Gulmarg has been formally handed over by Baramulla Police to the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K for expert examination and preservation.

In a statement issued here to news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, Police in Baramulla handed over an ancient stone sculpture/ artefact to a team from the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K, headed by Dr Javed Ahmad Mattoo.

The sculpture, believed to depict either Lord Vishnu or Lord Surya, appears to be centuries old and was discovered on the outskirts of Gulmarg during a routine patrol conducted by Police Station Gulmarg.

The artefact, crafted in fine stone, reflects the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. Police took immediate steps to ensure its safety and preservation under the supervision of SHO PS Gulmarg and coordinated with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums for proper documentation and conservation, it reads.

The handover underscores J&K Police’s continued commitment to protecting and preserving Jammu & Kashmir’s archaeological treasures and promoting awareness about the region’s history, reads the statement. (KNC)
