Police on Tuesday said that a boy accused of being a braid chopper in Delina area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district had visited the area to meet a woman friend.

An official said that the boy was “mercilessly” thrashed by locals before police rescued him.

“Today afternoon, the local people in Delina Baramulla caught hold of a boy who they alleged was a Braid chopper. On this, police party from police post Delina rushed to the spot. The boy was being beaten mercilessly when police intervened to rescue him. Large number of miscreants attacked police party as well but somehow the boy was rescued from their clutches by firing tear smoke shells to disperse them,” said the official.

The boy, he said, was immediately given medical treatment.

“During preliminary investigation, the identity of the boy was established as Nayeem Ahmad Malla S/O Ghulam Mohiuddin Malla R/O Dandusa, Rafiabad Baramulla. Investigation into the matter also revealed that Nayeem was in a relationship with a local girl from Delina village and had gone to meet her when he was spotted and beaten up by locals there accusing him being Braid chopper.”

Police has registered Case FIR No 177/2017 and further investigation into the matter is going on. “Miscreants involved in the violence will be dealt as per law,” he said.

“People are requested not to fall prey to rumors and it is reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against attention seekers in the garb of Braid chopping. Besides,  rumour mongers and mischief mongers will also be brought to book who take advantage of the situation to disturb the peaceful atmosphere.”
