A mass shooting targeted a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, on December 13-14, 2025, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens in what authorities classified as a terror attack on the Jewish community.

Heroic Intervention

Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Muslim fruit shop owner from Sutherland and father of two, tackled and disarmed one gunman during the chaos, wrestling away the rifle despite no prior firearms experience. He was shot twice in the process but underwent surgery and is expected to recover, with family and officials praising his instinctive bravery that likely prevented more deaths.

Event Details

The attack struck a Chabad-organized “Chanukah by the Sea” event near the beach’s playground, drawing around 2,000 attendees including families with children for menorah lighting and activities. Gunfire caused panic as crowds fled, with police raiding a suspect’s home and confirming the antisemitic motive on Hanukkah’s first night.

Official Response

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called such interventions “heroic,” highlighting ordinary citizens’ risks to protect strangers. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns urged resolve amid the tragedy, while investigations continue without prior intelligence warnings.
