SRINAGAR 18 Jun : Two accused arrested from Jammu and Kashmir sustained bullet injuries while allegedly attempting to escape from police custody during their transit to Chandigarh, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused were arrested in connection with the murder of Janki Das, cashier at Shri Kumar Medical Hall in Chandigarh’s Sector 11, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants earlier this month, triggering widespread concern and a high-level investigation.

According to officials, the accused were apprehended during a joint operation carried out by Chandigarh Police and Jammu and Kashmir Police after investigators tracked their location through technical surveillance and intelligence inputs. Following their arrest, the accused were being transported to Chandigarh for further investigation.

Police said that during transit, the accused allegedly attempted to flee from custody. Security personnel acted swiftly to foil the escape bid and, during the operation, two accused identified as Aryan and Sunny Mehra sustained bullet injuries to their legs.

The injured accused were immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment. Officials said both are stable and remain under police custody.

Investigators termed the arrests a significant development in the murder probe, stating that sustained interrogation of the accused is expected to provide crucial leads regarding the motive behind the killing and the possible involvement of other individuals.

Senior police officers said the investigation is progressing on multiple fronts and further arrests cannot be ruled out. They reiterated that all those involved in the murder would be identified and brought to justice.

The operation was conducted with close coordination between Chandigarh Police and Jammu and Kashmir Police, highlighting effective inter-state cooperation in tracking and apprehending the accused.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
