New Delhi, May 22, : The Centre has transferred Director General of Police (DGP), Ladakh, Mukesh Singh, to Manipur on inter-cadre deputation for three years, a move that has triggered strong indications that the senior AGMUT cadre IPS officer could be the next police chief of the violence-hit northeastern state.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for inter-cadre deputation of Mukesh Singh, IPS (AGMUT:1996), from AGMUT cadre to Manipur cadre for a period of three years. The Centre has also relaxed inter-cadre deputation conditions and waived the mandatory cooling-off period after central deputation “as a special case in public interest.”
The order, a copy of which lies with news agency Kashmir Dot Com, was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), following a reference received from the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 15, 2026.
Mukesh Singh had only recently been posted as DGP Ladakh. The Centre appointed the senior IPS officer as police chief of the Union Territory in January 2026, replacing S.D. Singh Jamwal, who was shifted to Arunachal Pradesh. Singh formally assumed charge as Director General of Police, Union Territory of Ladakh, on January 15, 2026.
A 1996-batch AGMUT cadre officer, Mukesh Singh is regarded as a counter-terror specialist and has extensive operational experience in Jammu and Kashmir, including postings in Reasi, Pulwama and Poonch districts. He has earlier served in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as part of its core team and also held senior assignments in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Before his Ladakh posting, Singh served as Additional Director General in ITBP and earlier held key policing assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, including Inspector General and Additional Director General-level responsibilities.
