Jammu, Apr 9 : A counter-terror strategy centred on deploying Temporary Operating Bases (TOBs) along high ridges and mid-altitude zones has yielded results in Jammu region, with security forces reporting gains against terrorist activity, officials said.

The approach, introduced by Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, comes in response to a spike in terrorism between 2021 and 2023, when groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed attempted to regain a foothold in the mountainous belts of the Jammu zone.

Officials said the police revamped its Special Operations Group (SOG), focusing on training personnel in guerrilla, jungle and mountain warfare. Units were equipped with improved weaponry and specialised gear to operate in difficult terrain.

New specialised teams, including “Snow Leopards” and “Markhor”, have also been set up within the SOG to strengthen operational capabilities in high-altitude and forested areas, they said.

The reward system has been expanded to encourage actionable intelligence and operational success, with higher incentives announced in select cases, according to officials.

They said coordinated operations involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security forces in recent months have led to “notable successes” in tracking and neutralising terrorists in the region.

In recognition of personnel involved in these operations, more than 100 police personnel have been given out-of-turn promotions, cash rewards and regularisation of Special Police Officers as constables — the highest such number in the force’s history.

Officials also recalled that 1,620 personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police have lost their lives in the line of duty while combating terrorism over the years.(KNS)
