Islamabad, April 9: Pakistan has announced the closure of schools and government offices in the capital Islamabad for two days as authorities intensify security measures ahead of crucial US–Iran talks scheduled later this week.
The move is aimed at limiting public movement and preventing any potential unrest, as Pakistan prepares to host officials from both countries amid a fragile ceasefire declared earlier this week.
The heightened alert comes in the wake of violent protests in March, when demonstrations by Shiite groups erupted across the country in response to US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The unrest left more than two dozen people dead nationwide.
In Karachi, the situation turned particularly severe, with 12 people killed after protesters stormed the US consulate and attempted to set the building on fire.
Officials say security has been significantly tightened in Islamabad to ensure smooth and safe conduct of the high-stakes diplomatic engagement.
