Srinagar, November 16, 2024: The Eco-Tourism Society of Kashmir held its 6th Annual General Meeting today at Hotel Regenta Center Point, focusing on the promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism practices in the region.
The event was graced by Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Honorable Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, as the chief guest. Mr. Tanvir Sadiq, MLA of the Zadibal constituency, and Mr. Farooq Ahmed Shah, MLA of the Tangmarg constituency, participated as guests of honor.
Mr. Sameer Baktoo opened the meeting by underscoring the vital role of nature in Kashmir’s tourism industry. He stressed the urgent need to adopt eco-friendly practices and prioritize responsible tourism to protect the valley’s ecological and cultural richness.
In his keynote address, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing a tourism board that would include key stakeholders. He assured attendees that eco-tourism and responsible tourism would remain central to the strategic vision for sustainable growth in Kashmir’s tourism sector.
Mr. Farooq Ahmed Shah called for collective efforts to make Kashmir pollution-free while ensuring world-class services for tourists. He urged stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices that support both environmental conservation and economic development.
Mr. Tanvir Sadiq highlighted the significance of preserving Kashmir’s iconic lakes and their associated houseboats, which he described as the “crown jewels” of Kashmir’s tourism. He emphasized the need for policies to safeguard these natural and cultural treasures while improving the livelihoods of communities dependent on them.
During the meeting, Mr. Mohammed Shafi Wangnoo was appointed as the convenor of the Eco-Tourism Society of Kashmir for the 2024–26 term. In his address, Mr. Wangnoo pledged to champion responsible tourism initiatives, promote eco-tourism nationally, and work towards making Kashmir pollution-free.
The gathering saw active participation from members of the Eco-Tourism Society and representatives of various travel and tourism associations across Jammu and Kashmir. The deliberations reflected a collective commitment to preserving Kashmir’s natural beauty and fostering sustainable, eco-friendly tourism practices.
