In a major boost to foodgrain logistics in Kashmir, the first-ever foodgrain rake of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) meant for Anantnag was successfully placed at the Anantnag goods shed on Sunday, officials said.

They said the freight train, comprising 21 wagons, is carrying around 1,384 tonnes of rice meant for storage, buffer stock and public distribution purposes. This marks the first time that an FCI freight train carrying foodgrains has directly reached Kashmir for handling and distribution.

Officials termed the development a significant milestone in strengthening the supply chain of essential commodities in the Valley. They said rail transportation of foodgrains will substantially reduce transit time compared to road movement, ease pressure on the already congested Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), and ensure more efficient and reliable supply chain management.

The officials added that the initiative is expected to improve timely availability of foodgrains and enhance overall logistical efficiency for public distribution in the region.
