Former James Bond actor Sean Connery passes away at 90

Sean Connery, the first actor to essay the iconic character of James Bond, passed away at the age of 90, reported BBC. He starred in six James Bond movies, namely – ‘Dr No’, ‘From Russia with Love’, ‘Goldfinger’, Thunderball’, ‘You Only Live Twice’ and ‘Diamonds Are Forever’.

The Scottish actor was knighted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. Some of Sean Connery’s noteworthy performances are – Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Marnie’ (1964), ‘The Wind and the Lion’ (1975),Steven Spielberg’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (1974), ‘Highlander’ (1986) and ‘The Rock’ (1996) to name a few. According to Reuters, Sean Connery was raised in the slums of Edinburgh and worked as a coffin polisher, milkman and lifeguard. His passion for bodybuilding directed him to an acting career and Sean Connery paved a path of success. He will fondly be remembered as the first British agent 007.

In 1988, Sean Connery won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘The Untouchables’. Apart from taking home an Oscar, Sean Connery had won numerous awards spanning over 50 decades. He has to his credit two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes. Sean Connery was last seen in ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ in 2003, post which he reportedly quit acting.

Remembering the legend, Abhishek Bachchan tweeted, “We’ve lost another legend today. After watching Highlander I hoped he’d remain immortal. He will live on through his immense work. #RIP Sean Connery. There will never be a better Bond than you.” ( TOI )
