Every society which seeks to recover itself from the morass of ignorance, degradation and decadence has to take resort to reform itself through the educational and socio-religious movements. Since the advent of man in the world, he has been making efforts to improve the standard of his life socially and economically. Change in the social pattern of community is absolutely essential because social conditions do not remain static forever. Those who do not change with the changing circumstances lose the battle of life.
The social life of Kashmir represented a dismal picture, the Kashmiris suffered from social ills, which could never be sanctioned by any religion nor could be allowed to exist by any norms of humanity. One of the most horrible social evils and practices which have been prevailing in the society is wastage of money on marriage ceremonies. Weddings in Kashmir Valley have become very expensive and a familiar problem for many Kashmiris is how to afford it. Parents and guardians of thousands of girls of marriageable age have difficulty in finding suitable grooms for their daughters because they cannot afford the huge costs involved in getting them married. However, as every cloud has a silver lining, a couple of social organizations have launched crusade on behalf of such families and their approach is gaining quite a following.
Recently Kashmir witnessed the biggest mass wedding when 105 couples tied knot at Srinagar’s Amar Singh Club to take an initiative in this direction. Although the function was simple, but hundreds of people had gathered to witness a first of its kind event in Kashmir.
The crusade launched by the Council has been greatly appreciated across the Valley. Thus promoting simple marriages and reduce lavishness in marriages should be our motive to curb this evil.
