Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that mental health is a “fundamental part” of our overall well-being, as he emphasised the significance of World Mental Health Day.

Sharing an X post, PM Modi called for a collective effort to bring conversations around mental health to the mainstream and lauded the people helping others heal.

He wrote, “World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of our overall well-being. In a fast-paced world, this day underscores the importance of reflecting and extending compassion to others.”

“Let us also work collectively to create environments where conversations around mental health become more mainstream. My compliments to all those working in this field and helping others heal and find happiness,” the X post read.

October 10 is annually observed as World Mental Health Day. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it was first observed in 1992, at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH).

This year’s campaign focuses on the urgent need to support the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies, WHO said.

Crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies cause emotional distress, with one in five individuals experiencing a mental health condition. Supporting the mental well-being of individuals during such crises is not just important, it saves lives, gives people the strength to cope, the space to heal and to recover and rebuild not only as individuals but as communities.

As per the WHO, it is essential for everyone, including government officials, health and social care providers, school staff and community groups, to come together.

By investing in evidence and community-based interventions, we can address immediate mental health needs, foster long-term recovery, and empower people and communities to rebuild their lives and thrive. (ANI)
