Seeks Speaker’s Intervention, Says Video Incorrectly Portrayed Him Giving ‘Gutka’ to Another MLA
Srinagar, September 25 : National Conference MLA Altaf Ahmad Wani, popularly known as Altaf Kalloo, on Friday raised in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly the issue of a social media video which he alleged had misrepresented an incident involving him and another elected representative.
Raising the matter during the proceedings of the House, Kalloo urged Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to take appropriate action regarding the social media coverage, alleging that the video and its accompanying description were disrespectful towards elected representatives.
According to the MLA, a video showing him interacting with another MLA was circulated on social media a day earlier with a claim that he was giving gutka to the other legislator.
Kalloo, however, clarified that the substance shown in the video was chewing gum and not gutka, and objected to what he described as an incorrect portrayal of the incident.
“Yesterday, my video was uploaded on social media showing that I was giving gutka to another MLA, but that was nothing, it was a chewing gum. They are disrespecting us,” he said in the House.
The MLA sought the Speaker’s intervention and urged that appropriate action be considered against those responsible for what he alleged was misleading or disrespectful coverage of elected representatives.
The issue comes amid heightened attention on social media content related to proceedings and activities of legislators, with members raising concerns over the manner in which such material is presented and circulated online.
The matter was raised before the House during the ongoing Assembly proceedings.
