SRINAGAR 03 Jun : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that a cabinet berth in the Union Territory government continues to remain reserved for the Congress party, adding that the government is ready to induct its ally whenever it chooses to join the administration.
His remarks indicate that the National Conference-led government has kept one ministerial position vacant for Congress while both parties await the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
In an interview with a Jammu-based media outlet, Omar Abdullah said the Congress has so far not sought representation in the cabinet, despite being entitled to a berth under the existing alliance arrangement.
He stated that when the government was formed in October 2024, the Pradesh Congress Committee leadership had made it clear that the party would not join the government until statehood was restored.
“When the government was formed, the PCC president clearly said that until statehood is restored, they would not become part of the government,” Abdullah said.
He added that the ministerial position remains available and that Congress would be accommodated if it decides to change its position.
“One ministry post is still vacant for them. If they seek a ministry berth, I am ready to give it to them,” he said.
The Chief Minister further said that, if required, he would take up the matter with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to complete the necessary formalities for Congress to join the government.
Omar Abdullah said both the National Conference and Congress share the goal of restoring statehood and are awaiting a decision from the Centre on the matter.
