A minor fire incident was reported in the Rajbagh area of Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.

A fire official told that the State Fire Control Room in Batamaloo received a call, following which a fire tender from the Gowkadal Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the spot.

Upon reaching the location, firefighters observed that the fire had broken out in a room on the 2nd floor of a four-storeyed building which houses a girls’ hostel operating under the name “Royal Girls Hostel.” A preliminary assessment revealed that an electric blanket had been left switched on, leading to overheating which ignited the bedding and mattress inside the room.

The officer stated that the hostel management acted promptly by using fire extinguishers, which helped prevent the fire from spreading.

Firefighters fully doused the flames and carried out cooling operations to ensure complete safety, he said.

He further added that in the incident, the bedding and mattress in one room were damaged by the fire, while the remaining property was successfully saved. One minor injury was reported.

The fire operation was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Director Dr. Mir Aqib Hussain, with effective mobility and coordination ensured by Aijaz Ahmad Shah.

Meanwhile, ADGP Fire & Emergency Services, Alok Kumar (IPS), advised the general public to refrain from using substandard or low-quality electrical appliances and to strictly avoid leaving electrical devices unattended in order to prevent such incidents in the future. (KNS)
