Where Did Society Go Wrong & What are Consequences of a Discipline-Deficient Society.
DR. FIAZ MAQBOOL FAZILI
In an era dominated by individualism and self-expression, traditional parenting values are fading rapidly. Gone are the days when children respected their elders, heeded advice without question, and adhered to societal norms. Today, many young people dismiss parental guidance as outdated, treating their elders as irrelevant relics of the past. Parents, in turn, have become hesitant to enforce discipline, fearing rebellion or even abuse from their own children.
A senior police officer, (name obscured) who has spent years counselling reckless teenagers and their parents, shared disturbing insights. He revealed that many parents are now afraid to set rules, leading to unchecked disobedience. Shockingly, he recounted cases where children physically and verbally abused their parents—a phenomenon that was once unthinkable. Reflecting on past generations, he noted how even the sight of a neighbourhood elder would make youngsters adjust their behaviour—straightening their clothes, avoiding vulgar language, or hiding cigarettes. Today, however, youth exhibit alarming trends—reckless driving, drug abuse, disrespectful attire, and outright defiance.
This raises urgent questions: Is the waywardness of today’s youth a symptom of a deeper societal decay? Where have we gone wrong? And most importantly, how can we restore the values of discipline, respect, and humility in the next generation?
The Decline of Parental Authority in Modern Upbringing. * 1. The Rise of Self-Independence Over Obedience**-Modern parenting philosophies emphasize independence, critical thinking, and self-expression. While these are valuable traits, the extreme interpretation has led to a culture where children reject authority outright. Unlike previous generations, where elders commanded automatic respect, today’s youth often view parental advice as unnecessary interference. *2. Fear of Being a “Strict Parent”*-Many parents today hesitate to enforce discipline, worried about damaging their child’s self-esteem or being labelled authoritarian. The desire to be a “friend” rather than a guide has resulted in a lack of boundaries, leaving children without a moral compass. *3. Technology and Peer Influence Override Family Values. Social media, celebrity culture, and peer pressure shape young minds more than parental guidance. The internet exposes children to rebellious ideologies, making traditional discipline seem oppressive rather than protective. Consequences of a Discipline-Deficient Society.1. Reckless Behavior and Lack of Accountability*. The senior police officer’s observations on reckless driving highlight a dangerous trend. Many young drivers ignore traffic rules, leading to fatal accidents. Parents, fearing confrontation, fail to instill responsibility, resulting in a generation that acts without consequences. *2. Rising Cases of Parental Abuse*. One of the most shocking revelations was the increase in children physically and verbally abusing their parents. This was once a rare and shameful act, but today, it reflects a complete breakdown of familial respect. *3. Drug Addiction and Moral Decay*With weakened parental control, substance abuse among youth has surged. The absence of fear and respect for authority makes rehabilitation difficult, trapping many in cycles of addiction. *4. Erosion of Basic Etiquette and Decency*Simple courtesies—such as speaking respectfully, dressing modestly, or showing deference to elders—are disappearing. The “Mohalla culture,” where community elders played a role in shaping behaviour, has vanished, leaving a moral vacuum.
Where Did Society Go Wrong? *1. Misinterpretation of Modern Parenting*; The shift from authoritarian to permissive parenting was meant to foster creativity and confidence. However, the lack of balance has led to entitlement and disrespect. *2. Decline of Community and Collective Responsibility*; In the past, neighbours, teachers, and relatives reinforced discipline. Today, hyper-individualism means parents bear the burden alone, often without support. *3. Overexposure to Rebellious Media Influences; Movies, music, dramas (tv serials) and social media glorify defiance, making rebellion seem fashionable. Children imitate these behaviors, dismissing traditional values as “old-fashioned.”4. Legal and Social Systems That Undermine Parental Authority*; In some cases, excessive child protection laws discourage parents from disciplining their children, fearing legal repercussions.
How Can We Reclaim Discipline and Respect? *1. Reinforcing Parental Authority with Love and Firmness*; Parents must strike a balance—being approachable yet authoritative. Clear rules, consistent consequences, and open discussions can help children understand boundaries without feeling oppressed. *2. Reviving Community-Based Moral Education*; Schools, religious institutions, and local leaders should collaborate to reinforce values like respect, humility, and responsibility. Mentorship programs can provide positive role models. *3. Encouraging Critical Thinking Without Disrespect*. Children should be taught to question constructively, not defiantly. Parents can foster debates where opinions are heard, but final decisions rest with those who have more experience. *4. Using Modern Tools to Teach Traditional Values*; Instead of fighting technology, parents can use it wisely, showing documentaries on the consequences of reckless behaviour, following inspirational figures, or using apps that promote discipline. *5. Legal and Social Support Against Parental Abuse*. Stricter laws and societal condemnation are needed for children who abuse parents. Counselling and legal interventions must be accessible to affected families.
The challenge of raising disciplined, respectful children in today’s rebellious world is immense—but not impossible. The erosion of traditional values does not mean they are irrelevant; it means they must be adapted to modern realities. Parents must reclaim their role as guides, not just friends. Society must reinforce the importance of humility, responsibility, and obedience without suppressing individuality. The senior police officer’s observations serve as a wake-up call. If we do not act now, the consequences—rising youth delinquency, broken families, and a morally declining society—will only worsen. The balance between modernity and discipline must be restored. Only then can we ensure that children grow into independent yet respectful adults, capable of contributing positively to society. The future of our society depends on it.
