Srinagar, Jun 26 : Over one lakh mourners are expected to participate in Youm-e-Ashura processions across several parts of Srinagar on Friday, with the largest congregation slated to take place in the Zadibal area, officials said.
Authorities have put in place elaborate security and traffic arrangements across the city as the Shia community observes the day with traditional solemnity. Processions will be taken out at multiple locations, while the main Zuljinah procession will commence from Bota Kadal and culminate at Imambara Zadibal.
Speaking to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Dr GV Sundeep Chakravarthy said the administration had been preparing for Muharram for over a month. “The mourners and the public are taking out the processions peacefully, in a disciplined and dignified manner. In Zadibal, where the largest gathering is expected, we are closely monitoring the situation,” he said.
The SSP said extensive consultations were held with all stakeholders, including the Imambara Committee and Shia leaders, to ensure smooth conduct of the processions. “The secret to success is police-public partnership,” he added.
In view of the main procession, traffic diversions have been enforced at Firdous Cinema, Mill Stop, Lal Bazar and Bota Kadal. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel towards the procession route. The SSP urged people to follow the dos and don’ts and traffic advisories issued a week ago.
The officer underlined the spirit of communal harmony in the valley, stating that festivals of all communities, including Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Muharram, are celebrated with mutual respect. “Kashmir is a perfect example of communal harmony,” he said. (KNS)
