Srinagar, Publish Date: Sep 19 2017

An anganwari worker attempted self-immolation during a protest in Srinagar on Tuesday.

Witnesses said that a woman protester tried to set herself ablaze. However, she was rescued by fellow protesters.

Over a dozen anganwari workers are sitting on a dharna at Press Enclave since yesterday.

The protesters are demanding an increase in their wages.

Yesterday, police foiled a protest by scores of anganwari workers after they blocked the busy MA road. Several workers were detained during the protest.

The protestors vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.

“We demand enhancement of salary to Rs 10,000 per month for Anganwadi workers and Rs 8000 to helpers,” said Tasleema Subhan, President Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association.
