The 40-day harsh winter period in Kashmir, known as Chilla-e-Kalan, began on Sunday, coinciding with fresh rain and snowfall across the Valley that brought an end to prolonged dry and foggy conditions.

The onset of Chilla-e-Kalan marked a shift in weather after several weeks of stagnant atmospheric conditions that had resulted in dense fog, smog and declining air quality, particularly in urban areas.

Higher reaches of the Valley received fresh snowfall, while plains, including Srinagar and other major towns, witnessed intermittent rainfall. The precipitation led to improved visibility and a noticeable improvement in air quality, officials said.

Meteorological department officials said the rainfall and snowfall helped disperse accumulated pollutants, easing smog conditions that had persisted due to dry weather and low wind speed. “The recent precipitation has contributed to better air quality by clearing suspended particles,” an official said.

Cold conditions, however, continued to prevail across Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures remaining below normal in several areas

Night temperatures are expected to drop further as the harsh winter phase progresses, officials said.

The weather department has forecast more rain and snowfall over the next 48 hours, particularly over higher altitudes, while lower areas may witness light rain. Cold wave conditions are expected to persist across the region during the period.

Authorities have advised people to exercise caution while travelling, especially on mountain roads and snow-prone routes, as freezing temperatures and snowfall could lead to slippery conditions and disruptions.

Chilla-e-Kalan, considered the coldest phase of the Kashmiri winter, lasts for 40 days and is known for intense cold, frequent snowfall and freezing nights. It is followed by two relatively milder phases — Chilla-e-Khurd and Chilla-e-Bachha.

  • Officials said adequate arrangements have been put in place to deal with winter-related challenges, including road clearance and essential services, as the Valley enters the most severe part of the winter season.(KNS).
