Makkah, Nov 4: A viral video from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah has triggered widespread outrage after a Saudi security officer was seen assaulting an Egyptian couple performing Umrah.
The incident, captured by a bystander’s phone, shows the officer roughly pushing a man dressed in ihram and grabbing his wife inside the Grand Mosque. The clip quickly spread across social media, drawing condemnation from pilgrims and religious figures who described the act as a grave violation of the sanctity of the holy site.
According to reports, the couple were performing their rituals when the officer intervened for reasons yet to be clarified. Egyptian media outlets and social users have called on Saudi authorities to investigate and hold the officer accountable. A prominent Egyptian scholar termed the act “a major sin,” saying that aggression within the Haram carries multiplied consequences.
As of now, Saudi officials have not issued a formal statement regarding the incident. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry is reportedly following up on the matter through diplomatic channels.
The Grand Mosque in Makkah, Islam’s holiest site, receives millions of pilgrims annually. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of foreign pilgrims and the conduct of security personnel tasked with maintaining order during sacred rituals.
