State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Monday directed the Jammu and Kashmir government to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to human Budgam resident Farooq Ahmad Dar who was used as a human shield by an army officer.
Dar was tied by army Major Leetul Gogoi to the bonnet of his jeep and paraded through dozens of villages on April 9 in Budgam during the bypoll to the Srinagar parliamentary seat.
In a press release, the SHRC said that they had also taken suo-moto cognisance of the case which was also filed by Mohammad Ahsan Untoo, Chairman International Forum for Justice Human Rights JK.
“The case was listed before Bilal Nazki, chairman of the SHRC today, said the release.
“While disposing of the matter, Nazki directed the state government to pay compensation to the tune of Rs ten lakh to Dar within a period of six weeks.
“Besides, Chief Secretary of the state is directed to file compliance report in the matter within the same period,” said the release.
