Sopore, Apr 27 : In a first-of-its-kind initiative to combat substance abuse, the Sopore administration has turned to the traditional ‘Tanga’ (horse-cart) as a unique mobile platform to spread awareness against drugs among the youth.

The novel campaign, organised by the civil administration on Monday, drew significant public attention as it moved through the town, blending nostalgia with a critical social message.

“The objective is to disseminate the message about the ill-effects of drugs to as many people as possible, especially the youth,” Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, Shabir Ahmad Raina, told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).

He said the district administration, following government directives, has scheduled daily outreach programmes. “We have a programme in every panchayat to spread awareness about how harmful drugs are for society.

Our aim is that young people should understand — I want to save my health, my community, and my future,” Raina added.

Tehsildar Sopore, Sheikh Tariq, asserted that the fight against drug peddlers will continue until the menace is completely eradicated, urging public cooperation.

Earlier in the day, the Chemists and Druggists Association took out an anti-drug rally through the town. The main event, which started from Dak Bungalow Sopore and culminated at the Clock Tower, was attended by ADC Raina, SSP Sopore Iftkhar Talib, and other officials.

Showkat Mohiddin Lone, President of the Chemist Association Sopore, said, “We always support such causes. This is the need of the hour. It is not only the responsibility of police or administration, everyone needs to play their part for a better, safe future and a healthy, successful society.” (KNS)
