Kashmir’s apple industry is facing unprecedented challenges, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people dependent on it.Climate change, pest outbreaks, and infrastructure challenges are taking a toll on apple growers thereby placing J&K’s most lucrative industry under severe stress.

Kashmir’s apple industry is facing unprecedented challenges, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people dependent on it. The industry, valued at over Rs 12,000 crore, is a significant contributor to the region’s economy. However, a combination of factors, including climate change, pest outbreaks, and infrastructure challenges, is taking a toll on apple growers. The rains have been unrelenting, submerging orchards in south Kashmir’s key districts—Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam. Floodwaters have uprooted trees, triggered premature fruit drop, and scattered ripe apples across sodden fields. Up to 70 percent of premium varieties like ‘Delicious’ have been lost, with waterlogged soils fostering diseases that could impair orchards for years. For small farmers, the devastation is crushing: a minimum investment of Rs 2 lakh in fertilizers and labour has yielded only spoiled fruit, with box prices plummeting from Rs 1,200 to a mere Rs 200. Across the Valley, thousands of hectares of farmland, including over 1,702 hectares of paddy fields with damages exceeding 33 percent, lie in ruin. These are not merely crops lost but livelihoods erased for families who have tended these orchards for generations.
Climate Change: A Growing Concern
Climate change is one of the major factors affecting Kashmir’s apple industry. Rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and droughts are impacting apple quality and productivity. The region’s apple growers are struggling to adapt to these changes, which are altering the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Warmer winters are disrupting the dormancy period of apple trees, affecting their productivity.
Pest Outbreaks: A Threat to Apple Production
A pest crisis is threatening Kashmir’s apple production, with yield cuts of up to 10-20% in severely infested areas. The pest outbreak is a significant concern for apple growers, who are struggling to control the infestation. The pest crisis is not only affecting apple production but also impacting the quality of the fruit.
Highway Blockage: A Logistical Nightmare
The Srinagar-Jammu highway closure has led to a sharp hike in freight charges, making it difficult for growers to transport their produce to markets outside the valley. The highway closure has resulted in losses of up to Rs 400 crore for apple growers. The logistical challenges are further exacerbating the crisis, making it difficult for growers to get their produce to market.
Low Prices: A Blow to Apple Growers
Apple prices have dropped significantly, with some varieties fetching only Rs 75 per kilogram, compared to Rs 130 last year. The low prices are a significant blow to apple growers, who are struggling to make ends meet. The imports of cheaper apples from countries like the US, Iran, and South Africa are further depressing prices.
Impact on the Industry
The apple industry in Kashmir is a significant employer, providing livelihoods to millions of people. The industry is also a major contributor to the region’s economy, generating revenue and supporting local businesses. However, the crisis facing the industry is having a ripple effect, impacting the entire supply chain.
Government Intervention: A Much-Needed Solution
Apple growers are demanding urgent government action to address the crisis. They are seeking reintroduction of the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) and implementation of a yield-based crop insurance scheme. The government needs to address infrastructure challenges, including road connectivity and storage facilities, to mitigate the crisis.
Some key demands from apple growers include :

  • Crop Insurance: Implementing crop insurance schemes to protect farmers from future disasters.
  • Compensation: Providing immediate compensation for crop losses and damage to infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure Development: Investing in flood-robust infrastructure and modern protective measures to mitigate the impact of climate-related disasters.
  • Market Support: Regulating carrier fares and prioritizing fruit trucks on the highway to ensure timely transportation of apples to markets.
    Conclusion
The apple industry in Kashmir is facing significant challenges, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people dependent on it. Climate change, pest outbreaks, and infrastructure challenges are taking a toll on apple growers. The government needs to take urgent action to address the crisis, including implementing policies to support apple growers and investing in infrastructure development. The future of Kashmir’s apple industry depends on it.

Recommendations

To address the crisis facing Kashmir’s apple industry, the following recommendations can be considered:

Implement crop insurance schemes: Implementing yield-based crop insurance schemes can help protect apple growers from crop losses due to pests, diseases, and climate-related disasters.
Invest in infrastructure development: Investing in infrastructure development, including road connectivity and storage facilities, can help mitigate the logistical challenges facing apple growers.
Support apple growers: Providing support to apple growers, including training and technical assistance, can help them adapt to climate change and improve their productivity.
Regulate imports: Regulating imports of apples can help protect the local industry and ensure fair prices for apple growers.
By taking these steps, the government can help mitigate the crisis facing Kashmir’s apple industry and ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
