SRINAGAR 06 Aug : Jammu and Kashmir has secured two of the 100 government-supported 5G Use Case Laboratories established across India, with the Institute of Technology, University of Kashmir, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu selected to drive research and innovation in next-generation telecom technologies.

The information was shared by the Ministry of Communications in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The Centre said the laboratories are being used to develop indigenous 5G applications in sectors including agriculture, healthcare, education, smart manufacturing, transportation and smart cities, while also strengthening the academia–start-up ecosystem for India’s transition to 6G.

Replying to an unstarred question, Minister of State for Communications Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said the Government has formulated a roadmap for indigenous 6G research through the Bharat 6G Vision Document, released in March 2023. The vision aims to position India as a global leader in 6G technology by 2030 by designing, developing and deploying intelligent, secure and ubiquitous communication technologies.

The ministry further informed that the Department of Telecommunications is supporting telecom research through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) under the Digital Bharat Nidhi.

As of July 21, 2026, the Government had approved 136 research and development projects under TTDF with an aggregate fund disbursement of around Rs 259 crore. Of these, 104 projects relate to 6G technologies.

The ministry said implementation agencies and designated committees regularly monitor the progress, milestones and outcomes of the approved projects under the TTDF guidelines. No separate announcement was made regarding additional 5G laboratories, but the Government said the existing programme is laying the foundation for future communication technologies.
