Jammu, Mar 27 : Congress MLA from Rajouri, Iftkar Ahmed, on Friday called for a government policy to regulate social media content and take strict action against individuals posing as journalists and spreading fake news.

Speaking in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Ahmed said the absence of a clear framework has allowed anyone to create social media pages and present themselves as media persons without accountability.

He said such unchecked activity often leads to the circulation of misleading or fake videos, which damage reputations without any mechanism for redressal.

The legislator urged the government to define who qualifies as a media professional and to introduce minimum standards or qualifications to ensure credibility in the field.

Ahmed also called for registration and regulation of media entities operating on social platforms, saying accountability must be fixed in cases where false information harms individuals or institutions.

He said established media organisations continue to perform their duties under challenging conditions and deserve institutional support, including insurance cover and financial security.

The Congress MLA demanded that the government frame clear rules to address the issue and ensure responsible dissemination of information.(KNS).
