The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) today announced that it would observe October 17-18 as martyrs’ days in memory of four student leaders who were killed here allegedly in police firing in 1966.

Brijmohan Sharma, Subhash Chandra, Gulshan Handa were killed on October 17 inside GGM Science College while Gurcharan Singh was killed in Kanak Mandi here the next day in 1966.

They were part of a massive student agitation which demanded a separate university for Jammu besides a separate medical college, engineering college and law college.

The JKNPP also said it would celebrate October 27 as Accession Day. Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947 and it was accepted by Governor General Lord Mountbatten the next day.

“Our party has declared that October 17-18 shall be observed as martyrs’ day in memory of four student leaders who were killed in 1966 in Jammu,” JKNPP general secretary Anita Thakur said.

She claimed that an inquiry commission set up on the directions of then prime minister Indira Gandhi had held the police responsible for the deaths.

National Party Students Union (NPSU) president Thakur Virender Singh would head a panel of students and organise a memorial meeting on the 51st anniversary in which the JKNPP committee would also participate, she added.

The JKNPP working committee and all party activists would celebrate Accession Day on its 71th anniversary this year, she said.
