Sopore, Apr 13: Protests broke out at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore on Monday after students accused a senior lecturer of sexually assaulting a classmate. The allegation triggered anger across the campus, with students raising slogans and demanding strict action.
Witnesses said groups of students walked out of classrooms and gathered in the school grounds. The protest spread quickly, forcing authorities to intervene. The situation remained tense as students continued to press for immediate action.
The Directorate of School Education Kashmir suspended the accused lecturer. According to the DSEK order, Mir, a senior lecturer in Urdu, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. He has also been attached to BHSS Badugam in Gurez, Bandipora.
Officials said an inquiry has been ordered. The Joint Director North will conduct the probe and submit a report within 15 days to ensure a time-bound investigation into the allegation.
Police registered a case soon after the protests. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Iftikhar Talib said an FIR has been filed and legal proceedings have begun. “Police teams are engaging with students to maintain calm and assure them that the matter will be investigated fairly,” he said.
The SSP added that the accused, also known as Azhar, is under investigation and all aspects of the case are being examined.
Authorities also ordered the closure of many schools in Sopore, which include Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore, Boys Higher Secondary School Sopore, and Government Degree College Sopore will remain closed from April 15 to April 18.
Officials said the step was taken to maintain order and ensure student safety. They added that the situation is under close watch and further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
